Hospitals did not admit patients with communicable diseases back in 1872. People with contagious and untreatable illnesses such as smallpox, cholera and other serious diseases were segregated and kept at the Pest House. A fence augmented the gulley at that time, and supplies were transferred across via buckets and pullchains. Tenants who live in the base housing have felt strong presence in their homes.
